CHAPAK MOVIE REVIEW

Meghna Gulzar's film Chhapaak is a brave story of a woman’s grit and indomitable spirit released on 10th January2020.

THEME OF THE MOVIE:

'Chhaapak' is a sensitive film with a delicate, yet powerful, handling of a heinous crime against women, and an important story that needs to be heard.

‘Chhapaak’ is inspired by the story of real-life acid attack survivor, Laxmi Aggarwal, who has become a symbol of strength and inspiration for other women. The film is a fictionalized account with Deepika Padukone playing the central character Malti, who is assaulted and attacked in broad daylight on the streets of Delhi by a friend of the family, Basheer Khan after she rejects his romantic advances. In flashbacks, she recalls the crime and her arduous recovery; in the present, she takes a job helping other survivors and, with a team of female lawyers, tries to change Indian law to reflect the seriousness of the violence committed against her. Meanwhile, after unsuccessful attempts in seeking a job owing to her disfigured face post an acid-attack, Malti (Deepika Padukone) decides to work for an NGO run by Amol (Vikrant Massey) which fights against acid attack violence. Slowly, she tries to rebuild her life and help in upliftment of other acid-attack survivors as well. Not wanting any other girl to undergo similar trauma as her, Malti even files a PIL for acid ban in the country. The rest of the plot revolves around how she triumphs against all odds and brings her culprits to justice.

Deepika being the soul of the film, delivered a brilliant, immersive performance. In fact, there are many scenes wherein her act will move you to tears – like the one where she holds up an earing to her face but realizes now she can’t wear it on. Shattered with fear and discouragement she sees her face for the first time in a mirror after the attack. Precisely why Malti’s character is a winner because at no point does she succumb to self-pity.

Meghna Gulzar takes a light approach to this heavy subject, using familiar stylistic flourishes to soften the story also it includes several songs, the title track being the heartbreaking song that comes soon after the attack on Malti. The music draws the story into the heightened, emotional track, "Koi chehra mita ke, Aur aankh se hata ke, Chand chheentein udaa ke jo gaya...Chhapaak se pehchaan le gaya,' as Arijit Singh's piercing voice plays in the background, we see Malti (Deepika Padukone) wincing and screaming in pain after being attacked with acid. Until a man rushes to her aid and pours a bottle of water over her. This gut-wrenching scene is enough to make one understand how a single 'splash' can destroy one's life.

While watching this movie, it made me realize acid attacks are so common and yet remain unnoticed and unheard by the court. When Malti took a stand for the entire acid attack community she was questioned  Women never get their chance to prove themselves they are always considered as a sexual object and a weaker section of society and this is the reason why feminism is important for every women. Why a woman is subjected to question every now and then? Why does women existence remain such questionable despite so many struggles and pain in their lives? Chappaak is a rare film that makes you experience all the human emotions- shock, pain, sadness, hurt, helplessness, struggle, joy, euphoria & love. This Movie inspired me to be brave smart, bold, and confident enough to fight even the darkest phase of your life, and I'm sure it will inspire millions and billions of other people, a must-watch movie.

LESSONS WE CAN LEARN FROM CHHAPAAK MOVIE:

  •  BE COURAGEOUSHere in this film, we see that Malti goes from pain to accepting her being and always stays super happy, no matter what. Her courage made her win her battle.
  • BE HOPEFUL: Pain is real, tears are real but so is hope and pride which is very well portrayed in this film by Malti's character.
  •   HIGH SELF- ESTEEM AND SELF- CONFIDENCE: Malti shows that she is a winner as at no point she turns up to self-pity and discouragement.
  • INSPIRATION TO OTHERS: In the film, lawyer said attack "unhi ladkiyoon par hua jo ya to padhna chahti hti ya to badhna chahti thi" she replied "unlogo meri surat badli hai dil nahi" and by that she mean they have changed my face but not my dreams.
  • LEADERSHIP QUALITY: This movie is full of such powerful Leadership traits. Malti is a woman of few words who fights for justice of other women too and reclaims her life In one of the scenes in the film, Deepika Padukone's Malti quips, "Unhone meri surat badli hai, mera mann nahi" and it makes you realize the importance of standing confident and undeterred even in the darkest phase of life.
